Rather than simply diagnosing, treating, and managing disease states, Dr. Varveris focuses on understanding why the medical problem developed in the first place. With his anti-aging, regenerative & functional approach, the goal becomes returning your body to a healthful, pre-disease state.

Anti-aging, Regenerative & Functional Medicine in Naples, FL
Dr. Varveris strives to get to the root of what's keeping your body from attaining the natural health for which it yearns. His goal is to bring you back to a state of optimal cellular and metabolic wellness. Since your cells make up your tissues, which make up your organs, which make up your organ systems, which make up you, your own complete organism; this will serve to get YOU back to your most healthful state. Also, please recognize that metabolic disorders serve as the foundation for the development of most future disease states - including arthritis, autoimmune disease, cancer, cardiovascular disease, dementia, diabetes, and osteoporosis. His approach will help restore natural balance to your body, increasing telomere length (see below), reducing inflammation, normalizing immune cell function, and minimizing DNA oxidative damage (see below) to promote healthy aging.
In this endeavor, Dr. Varveris focuses on correcting any hormonal and/or nutritional deficiencies that exist as well as any unhealthy states of toxicity that have developed over time (see below).
TELOMERE LENGTH & DNA OXIDATION
Telomeres are regions of repetitive DNA sequences at the end of our chromosomes that protect those chromosomes from various forms of damage. They function similar to the plastic tips at the end of shoelaces. Over time and with each cell division, telomeres shorten. This shortening seems related to oxidative injury (representing a form of internal rotting or rusting) to the DNA of our genes that results in a reduction of cellular function. Dr. Varveris performs specialized testing to measure both DNA oxidation as well as telomere length, which gives a good indication of your physiologic age as it compares to your chronologic age. If DNA oxidation is excessive and/or telomere length is sub-optimal, a therapeutic plan will be developed to: 1) first slow the process; 2) then halt it; and 3) eventually reverse it. Please note that minimizing oxidative stress is crucial to help you maintain appropriate lean muscle mass in the years and decades to come.
Hormones are molecules produced by certain glands within the body that are transported via the bloodstream to modify the activity of organ systems, organs, tissues, and cells elsewhere in the body. By doing so, hormones regulate many important aspects of our physiology and behavior - development, digestion, growth, excretion, lactation, mood, movement, reproduction, respiration, sensation, sleep, and stress. Hormones affect cells by binding to specific cellular receptors, which leads to the increase or decrease in synthesis of various important cellular proteins, both structural as well as metabolic. It is well understood that hormone levels decline with age. In the past, it was thought that the aging process caused the low hormonal levels. We now understand that it is the low hormone levels that in many ways lead to aging. To optimize your overall health, Dr. Varveris will determine your baseline hormone levels, focusing primarily on energy-related hormones (cortisol, insulin, and thyroid hormone), sex-related hormones (estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone) and growth hormone. After doing so, he will develop a plan to get your hormone levels back into natural balance, greatly enhancing your overall health and vitality. Please recognize that good hormonal balance is also very important to help you maintain appropriate lean muscle mass in the years and decades to come.
Most of us understand that proper nutrition is the foundation of good health. As we age, our nutritional status declines and correcting this can slow the aging process and reverse many of its unhealthy aspects. Nutrition can be broken down into macro-nutrition (calories, carbohydrates [fiber, starch, sugar], fat, protein, and water) as well as micro-nutrition (amino acids, co-enzymes, co-factors, fatty acids, minerals, and vitamins). Dr. Varveris improves both aspects of your nutritional status by designing you an individualized diet plan as well as a personalized supplement program. The diet plan will be based on what specific food types are most compatible with your physiology, while the supplement program will be based on detailed laboratory analysis of your blood levels of important cellular micronutrients. Similar to healthy low levels of oxidation and good hormonal balance, proper nutrition is also crucial to help you maintain appropriate lean muscle mass in the years and decades to come.
All of us suffer from varying degrees of toxicity. This toxicity is caused both by our behavior and activities (i.e. drinking, eating, and smoking) as well as by our environment (i.e. pollution in the air, earth, and water). Alcohol, caffeine, and sugar are potentially toxic to many people. Various over-the-counter and prescription drugs (including even Tylenol) can have toxic effects in certain individuals. Heavy metals (such as arsenic, cadmium, lead, and mercury), as well as volatile organic pollutants (such as insecticides, pesticides, and plastics), are highly toxic substances found throughout our environment. Having low levels of beneficial intestinal micro-organisms and/or elevated levels of abnormal intestinal micro-organisms are other important causes of toxicity. Even such mundane things as excess abdominal fat as well as poor handling of daily stressors are common contributors to overall toxicity. Toxicity levels build as we age, and reducing them can be helpful in slowing the process as well as reversing many of the associated disease states. With his detailed detoxification program, Dr. Varveris assesses the extent of your current toxic load and how well your body is handling it. If the level is excessive and/or interfering with important bodily functions, he will develop an individualized detox plan (using the natural detoxification powers of the gut, kidney, liver, and skin) that is both safe as well as highly effective in order to reduce and stabilize the levels of toxins, allowing your body to return to the state in which it is healthiest. Like healthy low levels of oxidation, good hormonal balance and proper nutrition, a healthy low toxicity state is also very important to help you maintain appropriate lean muscle mass in the years and decades to come.
